What is a Tooth-Colored Filling?
Cavities, one of the most common dental problems, develop when bacteria attacks your enamel. In the past, cavities were treated with an amalgam material, which is a mixture of metals including mercury or silver. We now know that amalgam fillings do not fuse very well with the teeth and the mercury may be dangerous to your overall health. At Sunrise Smile Design in Phoenix, AZ, our skilled dental team offers tooth-colored fillings made from a composite resin to fill cavities and protect the tooth. We can also take out metal fillings and replace them with composite resin fillings for a safer and more attractive cavity treatment.

Best Candidates For Tooth-Colored Fillings
Composite resin tooth-colored fillings often cover the area of decay in the tooth once it is treated. Composite resin is a useful material that can be used to address other problems with your teeth, such as cracks or excessive wear on the enamel by teeth grinding (bruxism). Since the material is colored to match your teeth, fillings may be used on the front and back teeth for a great result. If you have amalgam fillings, talk to our team about getting them removed and replaced with composite resin.
tooth-Colored Filling Procedure
Receiving a filling with composite resin at Sunrise Smile Design is generally a simple treatment. The treatment area will be numbed with a local anesthetic to minimize your discomfort. Stronger forms of sedation can be considered if you have any anxieties or fears to help keep you relaxed. Once you're prepared, the decayed enamel can be treated with a unique dental drill that will be selected based upon the location of the cavity in the tooth and the amount of decay. After the enamel is cleared away and the tooth is disinfected, the space will be filled with the composite resin material and set. The filling material will be smoothed so it feels comfortable and matches your other teeth.
You will be able to get back to your day once your filling is done, but you might notice a sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures for a few days. You can use nonprescription pain medication to address discomfort or inflammation; however, you shouldn't have any serious problems. If your filling seems high or uneven, please contact us. Your filling can be kept clean by following a normal home oral care routine with daily brushing and flossing. At your annual dental exam, our team will assess your filling to decide if it needs to be repaired or replaced at any point.
Composite resin fillings are a standard treatment for dental cavities that are typically covered, at least in part, by dental insurance. A team member will contact your insurance company to determine your exact coverage so we can calculate your out-of-pocket costs. If you don't have insurance, our financial team will go over the payments we accept during your consultation, plus medical financing options.
